Like Elijah, running for his life, I sat on the mountain running from a hauntingly hollow version of my own life which was a far cry from the idyllic dreams of a shy, awkward, fifteen year old girl. And then, unexpectedly, unmistakably, the word of the Lord came to me. “What are you doing here, Sara?”

For those of us brave enough to take off our rose-colored glasses, hope is complicated. Hope lies somewhere in between the current, ugly reality of the pain and decay that exists around us--or its looming proximity--and the knowledge that love has saved the day before and can do it again.

I have always enjoyed using the Psalms in my own time of personal devotion. There are so many of them, and it seems like you can always find a psalm that fits the mood you are in or a situation you are going through.
