God’s Love Endures Forever: A Prayer Adapted from Psalm 136

We had a tradition growing up, of having family devotions in the living room. One of our favorite prayers to do together was Psalm 136. The writer lists thanksgivings to God for creation and God's work in history, and each line concludes with "his love endures forever."

Since I have been missing my church family, and the prayers and hymns we lift in community, I adapted Psalm 136 into a prayer that our congregation can lift "together" today, even though we are apart.

We give thanks to you, oh God, for you are good. Your love endures forever!
You made the sun that rises in the morning, reminding us that a new day has come. Your love endures forever!

You made the moon that looms over the night, assuring us through fears that come in the night, through fits of restlessness that you are there, holding the world in place as we sleep. Your love endures forever!

You made the stars that twinkle playfully in the sky. A delightful reprieve from the cares of life. You fill us with delight and joy. Your love endures forever!

You made the rain that sings the song of your care for the earth, of how you bring life to all you have created. Your love endures forever!
You made the birds who chirp your praises, you made the creatures of the earth, and you made us. Your love endures forever!

From the Israelites’ time in exile, to today in our own exile, you have been with your people, helping us through the tough times. Your love endures forever!

You have carried our church through so much, and we know you are always with us. Your love endures forever!

You have loved us from the beginning of time, and you love us always. Your love endures forever!
You have freed us to walk in new life, in freedom, in confidence that we are held by a creator who loves us. Your love endures forever!

We will praise you, oh God, and give thanks to you because you are good. Your love endures forever!
