Helping Grands

The Legacy Ministry is a ministry of our church with, to, and for older adults.

The mission project outlined below is a way for our older adults to volunteer their time in a meaningful way right here on our own church campus.

It’s called, “Helping Grands.” It rhymes with “Helping Hands.” But it is a ministry endeavor of Legacy Ministry where older adults (a.k.a. “Granddaddies” and “Grandmothers”) volunteer one hour per week, or one hour every other week, or even just one hour per month to help serve the needs of our precious little children in our First School (FS) preschool.

There are several ways older adults can help:

Reading a picture book to several classes.

My mom did this every week at the Dahlonega Baptist Preschool for nearly 20 years.

Providing 15-minute breaks to 3 or 4 classroom teachers.

Our paid FS staff serve long hours and, since we are currently short staffed, they hardly ever get a “breather” or an official break. This would be so much appreciated. Child safety rules dictate that a registered staff member or teacher be always present with the kids, but the Helping Grands could give the second adult (staff or teacher) a short breather.

Helping a class or two with arts & crafts projects.

Some of our older adults have great talent and skills in this area. This would be a welcome addition.

• Assisting with playground time/recreation.

If an older adult likes sports or being outdoors, this may be the best place to volunteer their time. Loads of laughter and fun!

• Decorating a bulletin board.

Again, if a volunteer has skills in this area, it would be so meaningful to our FS teachers and staff. And First School could help supply the needed art materials, too.

• Organizing, filing, distributing materials, etc.

If administrative help is an older adult’s “forte” … go for it! I’m sure Mrs. Irena and Mrs. Mason would love to have some assistance in this area as well.

A few more details:

Volunteers are needed between 9:00 AM and 12 noon OR between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM any day of the week, Monday through Friday.

Volunteers get to choose which day & time they would like to serve and how often (we suggest… a minimum of one hour per month)

Like all other leaders working with children in our church, our older adult volunteers will need to get clearance in a background check through our Church Office.

And the pay? Well, it’s amazing! Volunteers will receive love, hugs, and appreciation from the from the beautiful little children and sincere appreciation from the FS teachers and staff.
