A prayer for church community
From Acts 2:43-47
Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Oh God,
The Church--the first church--before the grand cathedrals and written doctrine and well-worn hymnals--gathered together both in the temple and in their homes. They were in awe of the wonders in their midst. They believed in a Savior for each and all. They broke bread together. They were glad and generous, praising you and seeking the goodwill of their community. And you, O Lord, worked with the humble offerings of gladness, generosity, praise, and awe to add to their numbers and save people to do the work of your Kingdom.
Remind us again that your church recognizes the wonders in our midst and responds with awe. Remind us again that our Savior--for each and all--will forever bind us together. Remind us that bread can be broken in groups of 2 or 20, in person or over airways, and in homes or in sanctuaries. And remind us that the gladness and generosity you compel leads to praising you and seeking wholeness for others. We offer you our praise, our awe, or gladness, and our generosity now just as we have since the beginning, and we pray that we do so to the work of your Kingdom.
Amen.
