The Words of God

The heavens are telling the glory of God and the firmament proclaims his handiwork
— Psalm 19:1

One of our scriptures for this Sunday is Psalm 19. It’s a creative, descriptive passage that tours the universe, laments the paltry limits of language, and goes on to specify words in the Hebrew language for “words.” Each provides clarity in both the positive boundaries for a civil human community, along with the divine expectations for healthy spiritual development.

The Bible is aspirational; it pushes us to be better, even as it comforts us to be calm. Worship of God, care for the world, and compassion for others need not exclude personal contentment. In fact, these passages indicate a joyful experience of life and faith given a proper understanding of God’s hopes for each one of us. I look forward to exploring this, along with Exodus 20 in our Sanctuary service this Sunday.

Eric McDonnell, our own resident expert on the Psalms will be guiding us through this same passage in our Fresh Start service. I encourage you to attend both – you will not be disappointed!

The Benefits of our FBCD Endowment Funds: Our FBCD Foundation Endowment met for our quarterly gathering this past Wednesday night after Bible Study. We had the pleasure once again of awarding substantial gifts to a number of good organizations and scholarship recipients. I am so thankful we have these tremendous funds available from our Foundation Endowment. We also are so fortunate to have other endowments as well like the Legacy Fund, which fully funds our Senior Adult Legacy Ministry and all the tremendous work that happens with under Mark Green’s excellent leadership.  What blessings!

FBCD Foundation Scholarships: Along those thankful lines, I had the privilege on Tuesday to attend a banquet at McAfee School of Theology honoring the nursing students at the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer. One of those very impressive graduates was one of our scholarship recipients from these same Foundation Funds. She would not have been able to attend Mercer without the help this scholarship provided.

She, in turn, will be ministering to people like you and me some future day possibly in a nearby hospital needing a well-trained, compassionate nurse. The blessing we offer from mission funds today, just might rise to us in the future as a quiet gift in our time of great need.

So we can be truly grateful to all of those who have gone before us, envisioning future, sustainable offerings that would outlast them and would provide glad blessings for generations to come.

The Challenge for You and Me: We can be those visionaries, too. What gifts might you offer? What offerings might you give? Let’s consider the future and the difference we can make.

May you have a beautiful and blessed weekend. I look forward to sharing worship with you this Sunday as we explore the power of Psalm 19 and The Words of God

Love,

David
