Sheep, Physics, and Other Messy Details
Our passages for the Sanctuary Service this Sunday are familiar ones. Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd …”) especially, is a scripture that even folks not involved in church life have heard before. Woven into these verses, along with our other passage from John 10 (“I am the Good Shepherd …”), we hear realities of life in the fields, the nature of sheep, the responsibilities of shepherds, the landscape, the dangers, and the possibilities. I hope you will join us, either in person or online, as we work through the implications of these biblical words and their eternal wisdom.
In our Fresh Start service, we will have the privilege of hearing from our own Dr. Paul Wallace. An ordained Baptist pastor along with being a well-known expert in and professor of astrophysics, he always brings fresh insights to the text and vital challenges to our living. As always, this service is also online; so we all have the grand possibility of being a part of both excellent worship experiences even if you can’t be present at one or either.
Paul and I both face the daunting challenge of trying to preach following this past Sunday’s preacher, Kristen Wallace (Paul’s youngest daughter). Her inspired words as our Youth Pastor were terrific!
Youth Sunday’s Good Success
I want to thank Zach Mason, our Youth Associate Minister, for his excellent work in both providing our youth fine leadership and nurture, as well as offering them the freedom to be creative and to be themselves. Pastor Shelley and several youth volunteers also gave valuable support. It was clear for those present as well as our audience online: these are fine young people doing very good work. Special thanks to each of them for their hopeful words, good poise and positive presence. The future of our youth, and our future as a church both are in very good hands.
Baptism again this Sunday!
We will also be celebrating the baptism of Virginia Hackney in our Sanctuary service. As has been our custom, all will be invited forward to surround the front of the baptistry as Virginia experiences the power of your presence right before her. I also invite you to join me in your prayers for her and for her exciting journey as a new follower of Jesus.
Thanks be to God!
Love,
David
