How We Ring

Some of us are more like wind chimes than church bells.
We are a little more Spiritual than Religious
We hold the Spirit in our hearts
And sing our praises at its movement
We are the sensitive singers
Giving voice to silent stirring
Beckoning all to stop and notice
The flapping of a pair of wings

But how God must love the church bell
Faithful to announce new mercies
In every kind of weather
Less easily moved by atmospheric shift
Yet reliable as the sun
In the constancy of its seasons
Yes, God loves the church bell
When none of us feel much like singing

God you have made my heart a wind chime
Sensitive to your Spirit
But make too my mind a church bell
In times when I can’t hear it
Give me holy balance
To chime at your heart’s will
And yet to ring out faithful
When all the world is still.
