Change the Way You Think

One of my favorite Bible passages is Romans 12:2 where Paul writes, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

I love this verse because it guides me when I feel stuck, challenged or uncertain about what decisions I need to make in our increasingly changing society.

The idea of becoming transformed (i.e. Christ-like) is dependent upon my ability to actively engage in the process of renewing my mind (i.e. changing the way I think).

Sometimes I’m approached by people who think, look, speak, act and believe differently than me. Other times I experience situations outside my sphere of comfort. My initial reaction is to withdraw.

But this passage challenges me to not react in fear and put up walls, but rather to respond thoughtfully; to examine my thoughts, feelings, and judgments and align them with the love of Christ.

Then and only then will I be transformed into Christ’s likeness. Then and only then will I grow. Then and only then will I understand what the love of God wills for my world at that moment.

As with most things, it begins with me.
