A Prayer for Stormy Seas
A Prayer for Stormy Seas
When the waters saw you, O God,
when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
the very deep trembled.
The clouds poured out water;
the skies thundered;
your arrows flashed on every side.
The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
your lightnings lit up the world;
the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was through the sea,
your path, through the mighty waters;
yet your footprints were unseen.
You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
God of the land and seas,
We were never promised an easy voyage or calm seas.
We were never promised a life path of fair days and calm nights.
Instead, we were promised your presence, your guiding hand,
And we declare in faith that this is a far better promise anyway.
We know that not all storms can be avoided or escaped,
So we ask for you to give us courage and strength to face them head-on.
Until we are able to see the sun on the horizon once more,
Sustain us with the memories of all the times you have carried us through,
All the times you have led us through waves even rougher than these.
Remind us that you are bigger than the trouble that seems so insurmountable,
And increase our faith with a testimony of your provision.
In Christ’s name,
Amen.
