The Christmas Season Unfolds with Joy at FBCD

Last Friday evening, I had the honor of welcoming a packed sanctuary to experience the grace, humility and compelling power of Misty Copeland, the world famous ballerina. Her compelling life story spoke to every one of us. The boys and girls, teenagers, parents, grandparents, and regular people like me were hanging on every word and responding to every emotion. As the first African-American principal dancer in major ballet productions, her story included numerous examples of struggle, discrimination and courage. Her story inspired us all, but especially for the multitude of young African-American girls and boys, feeling the energy and resonance in the sanctuary was sacred indeed.

Last Sunday: What a fine day we had in the Fresh Start early, and Sanctuary worship after. Tremendous music as always, and to have Audrey Clark officially join us in our Sanctuary service capped the sweetness of the morning.

And finally, our Decatur Avondale Children’s Choir under Mark Green's dynamic leadership, gave us an unbelievable event in the evening. This group and the families connected to it truly has become the pride and hope of our community. Eighty-four children and young people singing their hearts out on our sanctuary platform is nothing less than an ultimate Christmas joy. Thank you Mark (and Happy Birthday this past Monday!). The work, planning and leadership you have provided for this huge host of families is unprecedented. Bless you, Sir!

Cudos, too, to Randall, Ron, Jim, Milton, Jeremy, Casey, Gretchen, Shelley, Shelia and many, many others who made the program possible.

This Sunday, I look forward to sharing with each of you in our theme: “Joy in the Wilderness.” Our scriptures come from the traditional Advent Lectionary passages that speak of hard times and struggling people. And yet, in spite of trouble and hardship, joy still finds a way to blossom among us, even in the wilderness. I hope you will join us in either or both worship services for Christmas music and vital insights for Advent and beyond.

Next Sunday: We also prepare for Christmas on Clairemont: Keyboards and Choir! As most of you know, our terrific Christmas extravaganza organized and directed by our own remarkable Daniel Solberg, has become a staple of Christmas in Decatur. Do not miss this evening of four grand pianos, organ, percussion and choir! You must come early; our sanctuary will be packed. And our offering this year will be going to Vinnytsia Grace Baptist Church whose members and Pastor Andrew continue their courageous, vital ministry to refugees and the struggling families of Ukraine. The combination of incredible music and meaningful mission support will be something you will not want to miss.

What a joy it is to be a part of this place and you, the people that ultimate make this such a meaningful spot in our special city.

Bless you all and I look forward to sharing these good Christmas days with each one of you!

Love,

David
