May Mission Focus - FBC Decatur Assistance Ministry

Begun in 2009, the Assistance Ministry is the only ministry of First Baptist Church of Decatur that provides direct services to the most vulnerable population in our local Decatur community. We serve the poor, those who are homeless or facing homelessness, unemployed or marginally employed, families with children in need of shelter, food, clothing, individuals recently released from prison, those with mental illnesses, veterans, etc.

The Assistance Ministry provides services each Tuesday from 2-4 pm in front of the chapel. They serve between 50-60 people/month and help by offering Marta cards for transportation to appointments or verified new employment, Walmart or QT gift cards, help with paying utility and phone bills, short-term hotel stays of a week for verified newly employed individuals, clothing from our Clothing Room, referrals to area agencies related to employment, shelter, showers/laundry/haircuts, food, medical and dental services. In the winter months, we conduct a drive for cold weather wear, and we join other churches in Decatur to provide funds to support the Freeze Shelter operated by the Decatur First United Methodist Church during nights when the temperatures fall below 35 degrees. The Assistance Ministry also provides sack lunches out of the Welcome Center on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 am -12 pm.

We collect a monthly offering on the first Sunday of the month at the close of the service to support the Assistance Ministry. You may also give online on the FBCD giving page. https://www.fbcdecatur.com/giving
