Doing the Right Thing

Reflection

Sometimes doing the right thing can be costly.

That’s been the story of 2020, hasn’t it?

Graduations and weddings and vacations – canceled. It’s all a real bummer, and after - how many months?! - nine months of this thing, I am sure we are all tired of the precautions we have to take, especially as the holidays roll in.

We’ve gotten great news about vaccine efficacy from trial results. It seems like a light might be at the end of the tunnel! But in the meantime, the case numbers across the country are skyrocketing into some pretty scary territory and we may have to make some tough decisions about holiday traditions in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

The old traditional potluck may be on the chopping block, along with other special activities that we cherish. If you find yourself in this position, may you be strengthened by Paul’s encouragement to the Galatians:

“Let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.” – Galatians 6:9-10

Doing what it takes to stay safe and to keep others safe can be painful. Your relatives may not understand or agree with you either, which complicates the situation even more, but I encourage you to do what you believe is right and to communicate these plans with love and understanding.

This may also mean allowing relatives who are more cautious than you to stay within their comfort zone as well. So as you make your plans, let love be your guide.

And Lord willing, know that 2021 will be different.

Peace and blessings on your upcoming holiday season.
